Divide your points earned by the total points possible, then multiply by 100. The formula is: (Points Earned ÷ Total Points) × 100 = Grade %.
For example, if you earned 85 out of 100 points: (85 ÷ 100) × 100 = 85%. GradePilot calculates this automatically as you type — every keystroke updates the result instantly. No button press needed.
In most US high schools and universities, a passing grade is 60% or above, which corresponds to a D or higher on the letter scale. However, the threshold varies depending on context:
- Many college programs require a C (70%) or higher for major courses.
- Graduate programs typically require a B (80%) or above.
- Scholarship and honor roll thresholds usually start at a 3.0–3.5 GPA.
Always check your specific course syllabus or institution's academic catalog for the exact requirements.
GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using four steps:
- Convert each letter grade to grade points: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0 (plus/minus grades use 0.3 increments).
- Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points.
- Sum all quality points across all courses.
- Divide by the total credit hours attempted.
Use our GPA Calculator to do this automatically for any number of courses.
Use this formula: Required Final Grade = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight
Example: Your current grade is 72%, your final exam is worth 30% of your grade, and you need 70% to pass.
(70 − 72 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (70 − 50.4) ÷ 0.30 = 19.6 ÷ 0.30 = 65.3%
You need a 65.3% on the final to pass. Skip the math — our Final Grade Calculator computes this instantly.
